This song is a classic in our house, and my parents too. There have been many version played over the years. And my mom’s love for this song and her reminding us to listen to the lyrics and their meaning made me fall in love with it.
Now let’s be real for a minute (Don’t let your kids read this if they believe in Santa!)
I didn’t grow up believing in Santa. Like ever. I was told at a very young age that Santa was the embodiment of the Christmas spirit of giving because some people chose not to believe in the real reason we celebrate. That Santa was based on Saint Nicholas, a man who believed in blessing people; A man who understood selfless giving and practiced it. Yes I was hated and ridiculed in grade school, but I’m thankful that my parents took the time to explain it to me.
No more lives torn apart
That wars would never start
And time would heal all hearts
Every man would have a friend
That right would always win
And love would never end
This is what I wish for the world. I wish for the world to be whole and happy. That the quest for ‘things’ would be replaced with a desire to better the world.
This weekend coming is one of the biggest shopping weekends in preparation for Christmas, at least here in Canada. I would love if you could find a moment and maybe a dollar or two to fund a project this season that has nothing to do with ‘things’ but that blesses people with needs. Grab and extra item or two at the grocery store and place it in the food bank donation bin on the way out. Find that representative for the local homeless shelter on purpose before you leave the mall. Pick up a blanket or mitts or hats and find a drop box for people out in the cold this winter.
